A&E Biography-The Manson Women ('02)

A&E Biography-The Manson Women ('02)

Postby louis365 on Sun Mar 15, 2009 11:21 pm

This is a real decent bit of film on TLB and the Manson girls. Featuring Houton, Krenwinkel, and Fromme, it goes into the backgrounds of these women. Susan Atkins background is also talked about but isn't interviewed. It talks about Spahn Ranch and the goings on during the two nights of Helter Skelter.

>>> Through the years, there have been a number of these type documentaries produced. It's a little curious how Atkins has always refused to participate in any of them.

its one of my favourite manson docos. charlie is also interviewed in it and i seem to remember thinking that some of his comments were as close as he's come to admitting responsibility. i could be thinking of something else though cause i saw it years ago.
even thought susan hasn't participated in these docos she did do one interview with dianne sawyer for GMA- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwqooUe0wC0

I'm starting to believe the old indian tales that those hills have restless spirits...

Yes, Terrapin, in this one he does come close to admitting guilt. There is a part in it taken from the Diane Sawyer interview where Manson says something to the effect of that he admits he : "may have had influence over those people." But I'm not sure it is correct to say that it is the only interview in which he had done that.

kristijoyk I not only have not seen it, I had never heard of it before.

Perhaps the same interview, or perhaps not, Manson once said something like "perhaps in one psychotic break..." Something along those lines.

Do you ever really hear the real Manson? He is angry about being forcefully injected with drugs while imprisoned. I'm sure the drugs determine the moods you see. Charlie is a bitter guy no doubt from all his years of abuse in prison yet he refuses to change. He's still the same guy he was in 69: bucking the system with every breath. He can't admit guilt for that would be like submitting to the system. The system does suck you know? Charlie got that part right.

Well Webmaster, it's not in this Docu that Manson says anything like that, though he is certainly in it. That phrase your quoting there....doesn't ring any bells...

The real truth of HELTER SKELTER has yet to be revealed. In time it will be revealed to be in the book of the HOLY GRAIL prophecies.

Charlie is still waiting for the world. A world that is not yet ready for him but his own family will be in the very near future!

I'm very familiar with this movie.

I prefer "ANGELS WILD WOMEN" though which also was filmed at Spahn Ranch.

The films "HARD TRAIL" and "DIAMOND STUD" were also filmed there but are westerns.

The Manson Women doc is one of the better ones, although most of the defendant interview footage was taken from the 1994 Sawyer interviews...but some good archival footage was used as well. Would personally rather see archival footage, even if it's just the girls and/or Charlie walking down the halls of the courthouse in 1970/1971 than see another docudrama re-enactment with a bunch of actors playing various Family members.

Interesting contrasts in that Sawyer footage of LuLu and Katie, who indicate having remorse and harsh feelings toward Manson vs. old Chuckles himself, who doesn't indicate any feelings of guilt or remorse in the slightest. Then again, Leslie in 1994 (and, to a much lesser degree, Patricia) appeared to still have a slight chance of being released from prison in the somewhat near future, whereas Manson knew he wasn't getting out, short of "paroling into space".

Sadie didn't really give too many interviews through the years. Reportedly she didn't really associate much with LuLu or Katie, either. I can only really recall one or two she gave directly to a reporter that were done strictly for television broadcast and dealt specifically with the Manson murders; the rest of the clips I've seen regarding Sadie were taken from various parole hearings.

I only saw this A&E Biography recently ( and will be transfering it to DVDR very soon!).
To be honest I was a little disappointed that the interview clips were from the Diane Sawyer special but there was enough other material to really make it worthwhile.

Seeing Bill Siddons was a definite highlight!

I think the California policies regarding prisoners being interviewed by television reporters were tightened in the mid 1990s, if not outright prohibited. Probably explains why the Manson Women documentary had to rely on those Sawyer interviews so heavily: despite the interviews being nearly a decade old by 2002, that was as close as A&E could get to a contemporaneous interview with any of the principal Manson female co-defendants.

The California penal interview policy also explains why there's little to no video of them outside of their parole hearings since the mid 1990s, as opposed to a fair amount of interview materials available on the incarcerated co-defendants from the mid 1970s (when the restrictions were first relaxed) to the early 1990s.

You know who'd be an interesting interview subject to have if he were willing to talk and someone could find him? Clem.

Actually he does say that in this doc. The clip is from the Diane Sawyer interview.
