This weekend I went to the European premiere of Inside the Manson Gang at the Cologne Conference. It was shown on a huge screen in a big multiplex theatre at the Cologne Media Park. About a hundred people attended.
Unfortunately at first the operators had selected a lens with a wrong aspect ratio. The characters on screen looked like 'small people'. After about half an hour or so they decided that it wasn't the movie's fault and they decided to change lenses. This was a big improvement to picture quality. But strangely enough the sound now was about five minutes late compared to the things on screen. (If you already have seen the movie, you'll say: that wouldn't have mattered very much, because half of the movie has the sound out of sync anyway.) But five minutes really is overdone. After a couple of minutes even the whole projector broke down. To save the performance, they had to try to switch to the DVD-version, which luckily worked ok. I think the German audience must have had big trouble following the all English soundtrack, because movies in Germany normally ar dubbed in German. If you don't know much about Manson-history, the documentary is very hard to follow. For example: how would someone in 2008 in Europe know what the Zodiac-killer is supposed to have been, the movie doesn't try to explain that at all.
The next night the festival showed the original Manson movie. The venue took place at a more remote location, and apart from the festival crew just a handful of visitors showed up. Well, I think it was worth it, having the chance to see the original Manson-movie on the big screen, 35 years after its original release date.
